THE QUIET BOARD - BROWSER CHESS

IIS INSTALLATION
Extract Chess-IIS.zip into a new static website folder, or a static directory
under your existing games site. Link to its index.html or trailing-slash folder.
Keep the entire vendor/ AND source/ directories, licenses.html and web.config.
The Games link is /games; edit index.html if your games page lives elsewhere.

This is static HTML, JavaScript and WebAssembly. No .NET backend, OpenAI key,
server chess process, database, write permission or special cross-origin
isolation headers are needed. Stockfish runs in each player's browser worker.
IIS Static Content must be installed. web.config adds application/wasm for .wasm.
If IIS locks staticContent overrides, add that MIME type in IIS Manager instead
and remove the staticContent section. A 404.3 on the WASM file indicates MIME setup.
Use a static site/directory without a parent ASP.NET catch-all handler intercepting
these assets. If the parent site routes everything through .NET, configure a
separate static IIS site/application for this game. HTTPS is recommended.

FIRST CHECK
Open the game, select Play Stockfish, and make a move. The computer should reply.
Try local two-player mode, board rotation/top view, and a reload to verify saving.
If the engine cannot load, the page offers Retry; local mode still works. Modern
WebAssembly and WebGL2 browser support are expected. The legal move selector
remains usable if 3D rendering is unavailable. Older hardware may load or think
more slowly. The first computer turn loads about 1.8 MB of engine WASM.

PLAY
Click/tap a piece then a highlighted square, or use the legal move selector.
Promotion offers queen, rook, bishop or knight. Take back undoes one move in
local mode, or returns to your preceding turn against the computer. It cancels
any outstanding engine search before changing the position.
Four relative difficulty levels vary Stockfish skill, search depth and time;
they are not calibrated Elo ratings. Gentle is still a chess engine, not a
random-move opponent. There are no clocks or online multiplayer in this release.
Threefold repetition and the fifty-move rule are treated as automatic draws
for casual play, rather than tournament claim procedures.

Your move history and settings save in localStorage on this device/browser.
No visitor accounts, analytics, API calls or external runtime assets are used.
New game replaces the save only after Set the board is pressed. Export via
Save PGN to retain a copy. Clearing browser storage clears the saved game.

OPEN-SOURCE DISTRIBUTION
Stockfish is GPLv3. Licenses and matching engine source/network/build scripts
are included and linked from the public credits page. This original game code
is provided under GPLv3 too; Three.js and chess.js retain their own licenses.
KEEP THE SOURCE DOWNLOADS AND NOTICES ONLINE alongside the game. Updating or
modifying the engine requires providing corresponding source for that version.
See site/source/BUILD.txt and the public Open-source credits & source link.

DEVELOPMENT
No npm install or bundler is needed. Node.js is optional for preview and tests:
  node preview.cjs (http://127.0.0.1:5101/)
  node checks.mjs
No changes to your other games or server data folders are required.

UPDATE: ANIMATED MOVES AND OPTIONAL TOUCH-MOVE
+ New game offers 0.6-second, 1-second, or instant movement. Knights hop;
castling moves both pieces. Input is locked until animation finishes.
+ Touch-move commits a movable friendly piece when clicked/tapped or selected
in the move selector. Illegal destinations and other pieces do not release
it. Pieces without legal moves do not commit. The lock survives a reload.
+ Hover previews are optional and never commit a piece. Legal guide lines
are optional. Knights use an L-shaped guide.
+ Allow takebacks is independent. When disabled, the button and its action
are disabled for that game. Changing these rules requires starting a new game.
+ Existing saved games remain compatible and keep free selection and takebacks.
The new animation default is 0.6 seconds. No saved game is reset by the update.
This is a casual touch-move option for your own pieces, not a full tournament
implementation of all touch/capture/adjustment and claim rules.
